KU Social Sciences International Summer School 2023

“Building a Young Peoples’ Vision on the Sustainable City: A Case Study of Bangkok” Kasetsart University, Bangkok, 20 July – 7 August 2023

About the programme

The cities of tomorrow will be inhabited by the young people of today. Moreover, it is the young people of today who have a particularly big stake in whether we will collectively and quickly enough succeed in carving out a more sustainable future for ourselves. Yet, it is commonly - and regrettably - the same young people who tend to have little voice in the shaping of the cities they will be living in for much of their future lives.

This international summer school addresses this gap. It brings together some 30 students from across the world who during three weeks will engage intensively with each other and with young Bangkokians from various socio-cultural backgrounds to build a young peoples’ vision on the sustainable city. Bangkok will be our case study: a thriving Southeast Asian metropolis that faces a wide variety of sustainability challenges, and which is in urgent need of fresh ideas. The summer school gives participating students a unique chance to actively engage with their same-age peers in a new environment, learn all about Bangkok, and sharpen their research, collaboration, and vision-making skills in the process. On top of that, it creates an opportunity for young Bangkokians to express their ideas about the city’s future and have their voices heard.

The programme is highly interactive and combines lectures, city excursions, problem scoping and research design workshops, fieldwork, vision-making exercises and presentations. Out-of-town excursions are organized during the days off.

Who can participate and what does it cost?

Participation is open to second, third, and fourth-year under-graduate students from any field of social sciences and neighbouring disciplines. The main conditions are that you have at least a reasonable command of English, and that you are keen to learn more about sustainable urban development, look forward to working with your student and non-student peers on defining a sustainable future, and fancy an in-depth encounter with Bangkok. The programme offers place to 30 student participants, who will be accepted on a ‘first come, first served' base. The programme fee is US$ 550, with additional packages available for those who wish to reside on campus for the duration of the programme.
